French Military Presence to End in Ivory Coast

The withdrawal process, scheduled to commence in January, will see the French naval infantry battalion’s base in Port Bouet handed over to Ivorian forces. Currently, approximately 600 French soldiers are stationed in the country.

This move follows similar actions by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which recently demanded the withdrawal of French troops. France’s military presence in West Africa has historically been tied to combating Islamist extremism and maintaining post-colonial security arrangements.

Following the Ivory Coast withdrawal, France’s remaining military bases in Africa will be located in Gabon and Djibouti.
