landscape.
During his New Year’s address, President Ouattara stated, “We have decided on a coordinated and organized withdrawal of French troops.” This decision aligns with the government’s efforts to modernize and strengthen the Ivorian military.
French Military Presence to End in Ivory Coast
The withdrawal process, scheduled to commence in January, will see the French naval infantry battalion’s base in Port Bouet handed over to Ivorian forces. Currently, approximately 600 French soldiers are stationed in the country.
This move follows similar actions by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which recently demanded the withdrawal of French troops. France’s military presence in West Africa has historically been tied to combating Islamist extremism and maintaining post-colonial security arrangements.
Following the Ivory Coast withdrawal, France’s remaining military bases in Africa will be located in Gabon and Djibouti.
Broader Implications for the Region
The growing trend of West African nations expelling French troops highlights shifting alliances and a push for greater sovereignty in military affairs. It also signals potential challenges for counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
