the government’s commitment to striking a balance between protecting consumers and ensuring telecom operators can continue investing significantly, as reported by Emma Okonji.

It is now official that a revised tariff framework for the telecoms sector will soon be unveiled. This comes in response to mounting calls from telecom firms for a more balanced and sustainable tariff structure.

This discussion began in April 2022 when telecom operators, through their association, the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), approached the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) demanding a 40% increase in both voice and data tariffs. The proposal was aimed at offsetting the rising costs of providing telecom services nationwide.

During a recent meeting with the NCC and telecom operators in Abuja, Minister Tijani indicated that while a tariff hike is imminent, it will not reach the 100% increase requested by operators. “We want to strike a balance—protecting our people while ensuring that telecom operators can continue to invest significantly,” he said.

Opposing voices from consumer advocacy groups have raised concerns about the impact of such increases on subscribers. ALTON has warned that without a tariff review, the telecom sector could face collapse by 2025, a sentiment echoed by other industry leaders, including MTN Nigeria’s CEO Karl Toriola, who emphasized the urgent need for reforms to sustain the sector.

Airtel Nigeria and 9mobile have also reaffirmed the necessity of a tariff adjustment, citing the need for enhanced service quality amidst rising operational costs.

However, consumer groups like NATCOMS and ATCIS continue to oppose the hikes, insisting that it would exacerbate financial hardships for subscribers. These groups argue that telecom services are essential and should remain accessible to the general public without significant price hikes.

As discussions continue, telecom operators and regulators are under pressure to find a middle ground that balances the needs of the industry with the affordability of services for consumers.
