for holding up the flight until it was cancelled, leaving other travelers stranded, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumers’ Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, during a flight scheduled to depart Uyo for Abuja at 5:30 PM.

Passengers had been informed in advance that due to weight restrictions, some or all of their luggage might not arrive on the same flight. Those with luggage exceeding 20kg signed indemnity forms, while those with bags close to the limit were informed their luggage would be transported on the next scheduled flight, a decision they all agreed upon—except for the passenger in question.

Upon boarding, the passenger noticed her luggage wasn’t loaded and demanded that the aircraft wouldn’t take off without it. Despite efforts by Aviation Security (AVSEC) and the pilot, who even proposed carrying her luggage in the cabin, the passenger refused to relent.

The flight could not depart as Uyo is a sunset airport, and the airspace was set to close. Consequently, the flight was cancelled, leaving other passengers, including those with urgent appointments and international flights, stranded.

In a video shared on X by the NCAA, other passengers were seen attempting to assault the disruptive passenger as she was escorted by security personnel. One passenger revealed that she missed her British Airways flight due to the incident.

The passenger reportedly acted out of frustration, citing a previous experience in December where her luggage was delayed. Confirming the incident, Michael Achimugu stated, “Despite all pleas, she held the plane hostage until the airspace was closed. The airline had to provide refreshments, transportation for local passengers, and hotel accommodation for those who traveled from outside Uyo, incurring avoidable costs.”

Achimugu emphasized that the passenger would be prosecuted according to aviation regulations. “Holding up an aircraft through violent means is treated seriously, and could be considered a form of terrorism,” he warned.
