French President Emmanuel Macron Set For State Visit To Nigeria

According to Ireporter Online, the announcement was made by the French Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Marc Fonbaustier, during the celebration of France’s National Day held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The envoy disclosed that Macron’s visit will take place approximately two years after President Bola Tinubu’s official state visit to Paris and will provide an opportunity for both leaders to evaluate the progress achieved under the existing bilateral cooperation framework while charting a new course for future collaboration.

Although no exact date was announced, Fonbaustier revealed that the French President is expected to visit Nigeria during the autumn season. He described the announcement as a significant development, expressing confidence that the meeting between Macron and Tinubu would further strengthen relations and produce mutually beneficial outcomes for both countries.

He explained that the partnership between Nigeria and France is built on the principles of equality, mutual respect and shared interests rather than interference or the imposition of policies. According to him, both countries maintain open communication, consult each other on key issues and make decisions through mutual understanding.

The ambassador stressed that equality remains a guiding principle in the relationship, noting that both nations continue to uphold the values enshrined in the United Nations Charter. He added that the bilateral partnership is founded on listening, dialogue and cooperation instead of external influence.

Fonbaustier also highlighted the common priorities shared by Nigeria and France, including economic growth, job creation, improved living standards and environmental sustainability. He noted that both governments remain committed to promoting development while protecting biodiversity, water resources and the environment.

He pointed to recent collaborations between French and Nigerian businesses as evidence of expanding commercial ties and growing economic cooperation between the two countries.

The ambassador further reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to democratic governance, the rule of law, freedom of expression and equal opportunities for all citizens. He revealed that the French Embassy continues to support programmes aimed at empowering women, young people and persons living with disabilities to enhance their participation in economic and social development.

Fonbaustier added that the relationship between Nigeria and France extends beyond government interactions, encompassing partnerships with the private sector, civil society organisations and cultural institutions, reflecting the broad scope of cooperation between both countries.
