In a statement issued on Sunday, the ECOWAS Commission extended its deepest condolences to the government, security forces, and people of Benin, as well as to the families of the soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

ECOWAS expressed its solidarity and wished for a speedy recovery for those injured in the attacks.

The statement highlighted, “The ECOWAS Commission unequivocally condemns the heinous attacks in the Point Trible area by unidentified armed individuals on January 8, 2025, which claimed numerous lives.”

ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to fighting terrorism in the region, emphasizing the importance of its Counterterrorism Plan of Action.

The regional body urged member states to strengthen cooperation, especially in intelligence sharing and border security, to combat the rising threat of terrorism.

“ECOWAS remains dedicated to eradicating terrorism in West Africa through the effective implementation of its Counterterrorism Plan of Action,” the statement said.

It further expressed solidarity with the people and government of Benin, promising continued support in ensuring the safety and security of citizens across the region.

“ECOWAS calls on all member states to intensify their cooperation in intelligence sharing and border security. We stand firmly with the government and people of Benin, ready to support them in their fight against terrorism.
