Fire Emergency: Damaging Blaze At Anambra School And Shops

Although no casualties were reported, it was revealed that the fire resulted from bush burning that occurred late on Saturday, damaging some sections of the school’s classroom blocks.

Eyewitnesses near the scene told our correspondent that the fire burned for several minutes until firefighters from the state fire service arrived to prevent further spread to other structures.

When contacted, the head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Sunday.

Chiketa stated, “On Saturday, January 11, 2025, at approximately 4:40 pm, the Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call reporting a bushfire outbreak at Practicing Primary School within St. Stephen Anglican Church, Umubelu, Awka, Anambra State.

“Immediately, a team of firefighters and firefighting equipment were deployed to the scene, and the fire was effectively contained.

“The bushfire outbreak caused damage to some roofing materials of the school’s classroom blocks but was stopped from spreading further by the Anambra fire team. There were no casualties reported. The firefighters left the scene at 5:45 pm on the same day.”

Chiketa cautioned that, due to the ongoing dry season, the public should avoid activities that could lead to fires, urging them to clear surrounding bushes and grasses around their homes, offices, shops, schools, and other areas.

Similarly, a fire outbreak occurred at Lord’s Plaza in Onitsha Main Market, where two lock-up attachment shops on the ground floor were affected.

The state fire service chief confirmed the incident, stating, “Earlier in the morning at 6:10 am, a distressed woman reported a fire outbreak at Lord’s Plaza, located near Emeka Ofor, opposite the United Bank of Africa.

“A team of firefighters and firefighting equipment were promptly deployed, and the fire was contained. Two lock-up attachment shops on the ground floor were affected. There were no casualties, and the firemen returned to their station at 7:58 am the same morning.”

Another fire incident was reported behind the Security Office at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Campus, Awka. The state fire service handled the situation, ensuring no damage or casualties were recorded.
