Lagos Assembly in Turmoil As Lawmakers Reject Peace Deal!

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s intervention to resolve the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, tensions remain high as lawmakers refuse to recognize Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s leadership………READ MORE

Tinubu had brokered a peace deal, instructing aggrieved lawmakers to work with Obasa, who was impeached in January over allegations of financial mismanagement and dictatorship. As part of the agreement, his successor, Mojisola Meranda, stepped down to facilitate his return, with the expectation that Obasa would resign within 48 hours to allow for a new Speaker from Lagos West.

However, Obasa has remained in office, leading to fresh discord among lawmakers who accuse him of betraying the agreed transition plan. The Assembly has since gone on indefinite recess as many legislators refuse to acknowledge his authority.

Meanwhile, a new controversy has emerged over the approval of ₦5 billion for the purchase of official vehicles during Meranda’s tenure. Obasa had previously approved ₦7 billion for the same purpose before his removal, and he has now taken legal action against Meranda and 33 lawmakers, challenging his impeachment and questioning financial transactions made in his absence.

While Obasa’s supporters argue that Meranda acted without authorization, her allies claim she saved ₦2 billion by sourcing vehicles locally instead of importing them from Dubai, as Obasa had planned. The ongoing leadership crisis continues to deepen divisions within the Lagos political landscape.
