According to the sources, Wike provided over $3 million to Akpabio during their meeting. Following this, Akpabio reportedly hosted an Iftar, where he distributed dollars to senators based on their seniority. However, senators such as former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson and former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal reportedly did not attend.

On Wednesday, the Senate received formal communication from President Tinubu regarding the six-month suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy Ngozi Odu, and the State House of Assembly. Despite the motion being placed at the top of the day’s agenda, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele invoked Order 1(b) to delay the debate until 3 p.m., seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro.

Reports indicate that Akpabio intentionally delayed the debate to ensure fewer senators attended, knowing that fewer than 60 senators were present, far below the required quorum of 72 for a vote. In the House of Representatives, a vote on the state of emergency declaration failed due to insufficient quorum, with fewer than 80 lawmakers present, causing the session to proceed with non-binding activities.

Tensions were high during the session, with some lawmakers expressing frustration over the legitimacy of the state of emergency and questioning the president’s authority to remove an elected governor. The state of emergency, announced by Tinubu on Tuesday evening, includes the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the entire state House of Assembly for six months. Tinubu also appointed retired Chief of Naval Staff Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the sole administrator of Rivers State.
