Tragedy Strikes as Windstorms Kill Toddlers, Destroy 1,400 Homes in Sokoto
Severe windstorms have caused destruction in parts of Gombe and Sokoto states, resulting in at least five deaths, multiple injuries, and widespread property damage, affecting thousands of residents.
In Gombe State, strong winds struck the temporary National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Amada, Akko Local Government Area. Roofs were ripped off hostels and the main pavilion, prompting an immediate response from the government. Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Adamu Ibrahim, who visited the site on behalf of Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, pledged quick government intervention to restore affected facilities.
In Sokoto State, the storm was far deadlier. According to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), five individuals—including two children aged 18 months and three years—lost their lives when the storm swept through Gwadabawa and Kware LGAs on June 18.
An on-site assessment by officials of SEMA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that over 1,400 homes were destroyed. Gwadabawa alone recorded the loss of 878 houses, affecting 1,306 households and displacing nearly 8,000 people. Eleven others sustained injuries.
In Kware LGA, 523 houses were destroyed, with 18 people injured. Critical public infrastructure, including classrooms and fencing at Government Secondary School, Kware, was also damaged. The area of Kofar-Barga was especially affected, where residents like Ahmad Abbas had their homes completely flattened. About 100 homes in the 30-Quarters area were also damaged.
SEMA stated that it is currently documenting all victims and damaged properties to ensure timely humanitarian assistance from both state and federal governments.
Officials urge residents to remain vigilant, especially during the current storm-prone season.
