Nigeria’s Super Falcons Declare War: ‘We’ll Shatter South Africa’s Invincibility!’
Super Falcons Determined to End South Africa’s WAFCON Streak – Madugu
Super Falcons head coach, Justine Madugu, has confidently declared that Nigeria is fully prepared to shatter South Africa’s 15-match unbeaten streak in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash.
According to iReporter Online, Madugu emphasized that history holds no fear for his team and that records are meant to be broken.
The much-anticipated match between Nigeria and reigning champions South Africa is set to kick off at 5 p.m. today, July 22. South Africa, unbeaten in regulation time since their last loss to Nigeria in 2016, are facing a Super Falcons side determined to reclaim their dominance on the continent.
According to iReporter Online, Madugu stated, “Yes, South Africa haven’t lost in regular time since 2016, but we believe that streak ends today. Records are made to be broken, and we’re hoping that by God’s grace, this one ends with us.”
Despite Banyana Banyana’s impressive form and their victory over Nigeria in the 2022 group stage, the Super Falcons still lead in their head-to-head record at WAFCON, with eight wins from eleven encounters and a 16-5 goal difference.
While acknowledging South Africa’s growth under coach Desiree Ellis, Madugu noted that his side is not underestimating their opponents. “They’re a strong side, well-organized and deserving of respect.
But we’re equally motivated by the chance to reclaim what we once owned,” he said.
According to iReporter Online, Madugu also added that Nigeria is approaching the semi-final with focus and a desire for redemption, particularly given South Africa’s triumph in the last edition of the tournament.
“They took the crown from us; now, we want to return the favour.”
On the other hand, South Africa’s coach Desiree Ellis told CAF Online that her squad doesn’t need extra motivation. “It’s Nigeria. The rivalry speaks for itself. My players already know what this match means.”
