Amid growing anticipation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, there are strong indications that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may offer former President Goodluck Jonathan an automatic presidential ticket—provided he returns to active participation in party affairs.

This development emerged from recent remarks by a senior party official, who described Jonathan as a “national leader” and arguably the most unifying and respected figure within the party. The official emphasized Jonathan’s enduring political relevance and described him as the PDP’s most formidable contender, should he choose to re-enter the race.

“He is more than just a former president. Within the PDP, he is the de facto leader. Only former President Olusegun Obasanjo rivals him in national stature,” the party stalwart asserted during a media engagement in Abuja.

High-level consultations are reportedly underway between PDP stakeholders and close allies of Jonathan in a bid to persuade him to resume full-scale political activity. The source suggested that many within the party see him as the ideal candidate to spearhead a national recovery, particularly amid increasing calls for a southern presidency.

“The nation is at a crossroads. We must act for the sake of future generations. In this context, someone of Jonathan’s caliber stands out,” the official noted.

When asked whether the party would formally consider awarding Jonathan an automatic ticket, the PDP figure did not hesitate: “That is my position. Quote me anywhere. I support it wholeheartedly. The country needs rescue, and so does the party.”

The PDP official also praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, highlighting him as a dynamic leader capable of bridging generational divides. Makinde and Jonathan, he said, represent the kind of leadership Nigeria needs going forward.

As Nigeria’s political climate continues to evolve, internal deliberations and strategic recalibrations within the PDP are expected to intensify in the coming months.
