INEC Fixes August 21 for Supplementary Election in Zamfara State Constituency

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a supplementary election will be conducted on August 21 in five polling units within the Kaura Namoda South State Assembly constituency of Zamfara State.

According to IReporter Online, the decision was disclosed by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mahmud Isah, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Gusau on Tuesday.

He explained that the rerun became necessary after the August 16 bye-election was declared inconclusive due to irregularities and result cancellations in specific polling units.

The supplementary election will be held in three polling units in Kyambarawa Ward—Shiyar Magaji (Kofar Hamza) 002, Tukasu (Sabuwar Kasuwa) 009, and Kofar Fafa (Shiyar Fada)—as well as in two polling units in Sakajiki Ward—Alko (Shiyar Kudu) 002 and Shiyar Nufawa (Kofar MD Nuhu) 007.

It will be recalled that INEC suspended the initial poll after vote cancellations affected the outcome in the five affected units.

According to IReporter Online, the Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University, Gusau, provided a breakdown of the voter statistics.

He stated that 5,446 voters were registered in the affected areas, with 3,265 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) already collected.

He further noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) led the poll with 7,001 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followed with 5,339 votes. However, with a vote margin of 1,662—less than the number of collected PVCs—INEC determined that the results could not be conclusive.

INEC clarified that its decision was made in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022.

According to IReporter Online, the commission specifically cited Sections 24 (2 & 3), 47 (3), and 51 (2) of the Act to justify its position, emphasizing the need to uphold electoral integrity and ensure no voter is disenfranchised due to procedural anomalies.
