Uzodinma Appoints Justice Ikeoha As Imo’s New Acting Chief Judge, Swears In Attorney General

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has sworn in Hon. Justice Ijeoma Agugua as the new Acting Chief Judge of the state and Barrister Paul Obinatu as the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General.

Justice Agugua succeeds Justice Theophilus, who was removed from office a few weeks after his appointment for alleged non-compliance with the hierarchical process of selection.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Government House in Owerri, Governor Uzodinma described the appointments as a demonstration of his administration’s resolve to ensure the smooth functioning of all arms of government. He expressed regret over the prolonged absence of a substantive head of the judiciary, describing the situation as both unfortunate and instructive.

“Having navigated that turbulent phase with maturity and diligence, we have taken decisive and lawful steps to restore the dignity of our judiciary and reinforce the principles of justice and due process,” the governor stated. He explained that the appointments followed the recommendation and ratification of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

Uzodinma emphasized that the new appointments signify a fresh chapter in strengthening accountability, judicial independence, and competence in the state. He also expressed confidence that the appointees would carry out their duties with integrity, professionalism, and fidelity to the constitution.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that no arm of government lags behind in promoting service delivery, the rule of law, and good governance in Imo State.
