CONUA Breaks Silence, Rejects Strike Action, Vows Commitment To Academic Stability
According to Ireporter Online, the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining academic stability across Nigerian universities, distancing itself from reports of any planned or ongoing strike action.
In a statement issued by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the union categorically dismissed speculations circulating on social media suggesting that it was part of any industrial action. Sunmonu emphasized that CONUA remains dedicated to promoting excellence and ensuring the smooth operation of the university system through dialogue and constructive engagement with the government and relevant stakeholders.
He urged members of the union to continue performing their academic and administrative duties diligently, attend to students, and uphold professional standards. Sunmonu clarified that the union currently has no basis to declare any industrial dispute, explaining that although CONUA was initially excluded from the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement inaugurated in October 2024, the issue had since been addressed by the Federal Ministry of Education.
According to him, a meeting with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, resulted in assurances that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be expanded to include all academic unions in federal tertiary institutions — a promise the Ministry has now fulfilled.
Sunmonu further noted that following nationwide congresses held between September 18 and 24, 2025, members unanimously resolved not to embark on any strike but to maintain peaceful engagement as the best path forward for the nation’s higher education system.
The CONUA president appealed to Vice-Chancellors to ensure the safety and protection of members who continue to discharge their duties, while encouraging students to remain focused on their studies without fear of disruption. He reaffirmed the union’s dedication to quality education, national development, and industrial harmony within the academic community.
Sunmonu concluded by emphasizing CONUA’s unwavering focus on fostering a sustainable, innovative, and productive academic environment that benefits students, scholars, and the nation, appreciating all stakeholders for their continued support toward advancing higher education in Nigeria.
