Nigeria’s Gas Output Soars 8% – New Report Reveals

Nigeria’s total gas production rose by nearly eight per cent in 2025, reaching 2.706 trillion standard cubic feet (scf), according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The increase, equivalent to about 198 billion scf, marks an improvement from the 2.508 trillion scf recorded in 2024, the commission’s Gas Production Status Reports for 2025 revealed.

The report indicated that the rise in output coincided with an increase in gas flaring, which climbed from 192.9 billion scf in 2024 to 204.0 billion scf in 2025, representing a 5.8 per cent increase. The NUPRC described the trend as steady growth in upstream gas supply, despite ongoing challenges in monetisation.

Analysis of the 2024 and 2025 reports showed a shift in the structure of Nigeria’s gas production. Associated gas rose slightly from 1.441 trillion scf in 2024 to 1.456 trillion scf in 2025, while non-associated gas surged from 1.068 trillion scf to 1.250 trillion scf, a 17.1 per cent increase. Non-associated gas therefore accounted for 46.2 per cent of total production in 2025, up from 42.6 per cent the previous year, highlighting a gradual shift towards gas fields not directly linked to crude oil production.

Total gas utilisation also increased, rising from 2.313 trillion scf in 2024 to 2.500 trillion scf in 2025, an 8.1 per cent increase. Utilisation as a proportion of total production edged up slightly from 92.2 per cent to 92.4 per cent, supported by domestic consumption, exports, and other productive uses. However, gas flaring also rose, reflecting ongoing difficulties in fully monetising incremental gas output.

Nearly 90 per cent of the growth in production came from non-associated gas, with 197.7 billion scf of additional output largely matched by 186.9 billion scf of extra utilised gas. Gas shrinkage and losses during processing and transportation fell from 2.464 billion scf in 2024 to 2.121 billion scf in 2025, a reduction of approximately 14 per cent, indicating that such losses remain a minor part of Nigeria’s overall gas balance.

The figures were released as the Federal Government pursues its goal of increasing gas output to 12 billion cubic feet per day by 2030 under the Decade of Gas programme (2021–2030), which has already facilitated more than 215 strategic upstream and midstream gas projects valued at over $8 billion, with an additional $20 billion in investments expected in the coming years.
