No Excuse For This “Shameful Act” — APC Fires Back At Makinde Over Controversial Oba Coronation

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticised Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing him of undermining the integrity of the Yoruba traditional institution following the elevation of three high chiefs to the status of Oba in Ibadanland.

According to Ireporter Online, the state government conducted a coronation ceremony on Friday during which High Chief Akeem Adewoyin, Chief Kola Babalola, and High Chief Sharafadeen Alli were installed as Obas. Alli, who currently represents Oyo South Senatorial District, is also a governorship aspirant under the APC platform.

Notably, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, alongside the newly elevated individuals and several prominent Ibadan indigenes, were absent from the ceremony, a development that further fueled controversy surrounding the event.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, the APC condemned the governor’s actions, describing them as unprecedented and damaging to the state’s history. The party alleged that the ceremony ridiculed the revered traditional system, insisting that there was no justification for what it termed a “shameful act.” The opposition further criticised the governor, characterising him as an accidental public office holder and maintaining that his actions reflected a disregard for established cultural norms.
