According to IReporter Online, the Presidency has described the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a political party grappling with internal contradictions and struggling to maintain coherence and balance. The remarks were made by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, while reacting to criticisms raised by ADC’s Forum of National Legislators regarding the President’s comments on the party’s national convention.

The ADC forum, led by former House of Representatives member Hon. Nnenna Ukeje, had accused the Tinubu administration of shrinking Nigeria’s democratic space, insisting that the country was at a sensitive democratic crossroads. The group also referenced President Tinubu’s past as an opposition figure who once championed political pluralism and judicial independence, suggesting that his current leadership appears inconsistent with those earlier democratic principles.

Responding via a detailed statement shared on his handle, Dare dismissed the ADC’s position, alleging that the party is experiencing internal disorder and engaging in political theatrics. He accused the opposition of adopting a familiar pattern of political attacks, misinformation, and attempts to discredit the administration in order to attract international sympathy.

Dare further acknowledged that the ADC legislators themselves had admitted to President Tinubu’s historical role in strengthening opposition politics and sustaining Nigeria’s democratic growth, describing such recognition as factual and unavoidable. However, he criticized what he termed an attempt to contradict those acknowledgements by portraying the President as a threat to democracy without substantiated evidence.

He maintained that President Tinubu’s democratic credentials remain consistent and unchanged, stressing that leadership principles built over decades cannot be dismissed by what he described as politically motivated claims. Dare also clarified that the President’s recent remarks were general in nature and not directed specifically at the ADC.
