Abuja Police Officers To Face Mandatory Mental Health Tests

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory Command, Ahmed Sanusi, has directed that all personnel within the command undergo a comprehensive psychological and mental health evaluation as part of efforts to reinforce discipline and improve operational effectiveness.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the directive followed an emergency security meeting involving Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units. The assessment is intended to promote emotional stability, enhance decision-making, and strengthen overall performance among officers in the discharge of their duties.

The exercise is scheduled to commence with junior officers on Monday, May 4, 2026, with the Command’s Medical Director, ACP (Dr.) Ifayase Olabanji Akinola, alongside the Police Counselling Unit, tasked with overseeing its implementation. Authorities noted that the initiative forms part of broader institutional reforms aimed at ensuring officers maintain high standards of professionalism both on and off duty.

The police commissioner also issued a firm warning against acts of indiscipline, emphasizing the need for officers to uphold professionalism and strictly observe human rights regulations in the course of their responsibilities. Senior officers have been instructed to return to their respective formations to brief subordinates on the new measures, with compliance reports to be submitted to the command headquarters. Supervising officers, he added, will be held accountable for the conduct of personnel under their supervision.

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory were urged to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious activities through designated emergency channels. The directive comes amid heightened public scrutiny of police conduct following a widely circulated incident in Delta State involving the alleged killing of a suspect by an officer, which has intensified calls for accountability and reform within the force.
