May Day: Akpabio Tells Workers “We Recognize Your Struggles,” Promises Better Welfare

According to Ireporter Online, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has extended warm congratulations to Nigerian workers on the occasion of the 2026 International Workers’ Day, describing them as the backbone of the nation’s democracy and a key driver of its economic growth. In a statement personally signed by him and issued on Friday, May 1, 2026, through his Special Adviser on Media, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio commended the resilience, patriotism, and dedication of workers across the country, noting that they continue to serve under challenging economic and workplace conditions.

He stated that the sacrifices of Nigerian workers remain vital to sustaining national stability and economic progress, adding that they deserve recognition and appreciation for their contributions to nation-building. Akpabio highlighted the roles of professionals across various sectors, including education, agriculture, healthcare, security, civil service, trade, and private enterprise, describing them as essential pillars of national development and the true heroes of democracy.

The Senate President acknowledged the difficulties faced by workers, such as rising living costs and workplace pressures, and assured that the 10th National Assembly remains committed to addressing these challenges through progressive legislation. He emphasized ongoing efforts to improve living wages, enhance workplace safety, reform pension systems, and expand job creation opportunities aimed at protecting the dignity of labour.

He further noted that recent legislative actions, including the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage Act, reflect the Senate’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
