British Council Unveils Film Lab Africa 2 In Nigeria To Boost Creative Talent
According to Ireporter Online, the British Council has officially unveiled the second cohort of its Film Lab Africa initiative in Nigeria, a film accelerator programme aimed at nurturing emerging filmmakers, screenwriters, and episodic storytellers across the country.
The programme is being implemented in partnership with EbonyLife Creative Academy in Nigeria and Iconic Steps in the United Kingdom. It builds on the success of its 2023 debut, which attracted over 600 applications, selected 60 participants, and provided training, mentorship, and production grants that culminated in showcased short films at various industry events and film festivals.
Film Lab Africa 2 expands its scope with a stronger focus on episodic storytelling and television pilot development, alongside the introduction of a dedicated writers’ lab. The initiative continues to offer a blend of virtual and in-person training, mentorship from industry experts in Nigeria and the UK, production funding, and industry exposure designed to bridge the gap between training and market access.
Targeting creatives aged 18 to 35, the programme also includes online episodic writing classes, a physical writers’ residency, script development support, and pilot production funding, while connecting participants with potential investors and distributors through showcase events.
Speaking on the initiative, Donna McGowan, Country Director of the British Council in Nigeria, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to strengthening creative industries across both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. She noted that Film Lab Africa 2 is designed to foster collaboration, enhance skills development, and create sustainable pathways for Nigerian creatives to tell original stories that can reach global audiences.
