Eddie Watson: I’m Driven By A Vision Greater Than Fame

According to Ireporter Online, Liberian-born actor, director and producer Eddie Watson has revealed how a chance encounter on the streets of Teshie in Ghana changed the course of his life and led him into a successful career in African cinema.

Watson was reportedly discovered by a filmmaker who believed he had the right look for the screen at a time when he had no interest in acting and was focused on survival, selling and renting DVDs while exploring small business opportunities. Years later, that encounter opened the door to a journey that would make him one of the recognizable faces in Nollywood and across other African film industries.

The actor, who has since built a career as a performer, writer, producer and director, has featured in several romantic dramas and gone on to establish his own production platforms. Despite his popularity and large fan base, Watson maintained that his drive has never been fame, but rather purpose, storytelling and meaningful impact through film.

He explained that his identity is shaped by both Liberian roots and Nigerian heritage through his father from Akwa Ibom State, describing himself as a “true African man” influenced by multiple cultures. Having worked across Ghana and Nigeria, he said these experiences have strengthened his understanding of African storytelling and expanded his creative perspective.

Watson also reflected on his entry into the film industry, noting that it was unplanned. He said his first exposure came after relocating to Ghana in 2008 when he was approached for a commercial shoot on the streets of Teshie. Although he initially resisted acting due to lack of training, he eventually accepted small roles that gradually developed into a full career, beginning with his first film appearance in 2010.

Speaking on the African film industry, he praised Nollywood’s resilience, energy and productivity, describing Nigeria’s hustling spirit as a major factor behind its global influence, while noting that the wider African cinema space is steadily evolving with growing attention to quality and storytelling.

Despite studying Economics at the university level, Watson said his education helped instill discipline and critical thinking, which he continues to apply in his creative career. He further stated that while acting allows emotional connection with audiences, directing remains his most fulfilling role because of the creative control it offers over storytelling, production and final output.

On his personal life, the actor confirmed that although he got married in 2013, he and his wife separated in 2024 and are currently finalizing divorce proceedings. He noted that he continues to maintain professionalism and personal values despite public attention and a strong female fan base across Africa.

Looking ahead, Watson expressed his ambition to elevate African cinema to global standards, calling for improved production quality and stronger award platforms that can compete internationally. He added that his long-term goal is to leave a legacy beyond entertainment by using his platform to create opportunities and improve lives across the continent.

He further revealed that fans should expect more of his work behind the camera, as he intends to focus on directing and telling deeper African stories rooted in culture, morality and meaningful social themes.
