Igbos Don’t Want A One-Term President, Ikonne Blasts Peter Obi
Prince Paul Ikonne, an aspirant for the All Progressives Congress ticket in Abia South Senatorial District, has declared that the Southeast is not interested in producing a president who would serve for only one four-year term.
Speaking during a media interaction in Abuja on Thursday, Ikonne criticized Peter Obi over his pledge to serve a single term if elected president.
According to Ikonne, the Southeast deserves the same opportunity enjoyed by other regions of the country, insisting that whenever it becomes the turn of the Igbo to produce Nigeria’s president, the individual should be allowed to complete two terms totaling eight years.
He argued that no Igbo voter would support a candidate seeking to occupy the presidency for only four years, stressing that such an arrangement would shortchange the region.
Ikonne also claimed that several influential political figures from the Southeast, including Alex Otti and other key stakeholders across Igboland, are backing the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
He further disclosed that Hope Uzodimma has reportedly assembled a team tasked with mobilizing Igbo communities across the country to support Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
Ikonne expressed confidence that the president would secure substantial votes from Igbo populations nationwide, not only from the Southeast.
Taking another swipe at Obi’s single-term promise, Ikonne suggested that four years would be insufficient for any president to make meaningful impact, arguing that much of the first term is often spent settling into office and assembling a governing team.
