Lagos Boosts Water Transport Network With 50km Channelisation Project

According to Ireporter Online, the Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen water transportation across the state with the completion of over 50 kilometres of channelisation works along key ferry routes.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Alebiosu, disclosed this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja, noting that the project is designed to improve navigation on Lagos waterways, expand ferry operations, and enhance safety for commuters and operators in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ development agenda.

He explained that the channelisation efforts will help reduce boat accidents caused by submerged wrecks and other navigational hazards, while also addressing persistent challenges such as erosion and flooding in waterfront communities.

Alebiosu listed completed routes to include the Ikorodu–Mende and Ikorodu–Agboyi channels in Kosofe, the Five Cowries–Lekki–Lagoon–Parkview corridor, Banana Island waterways, and the Ilado–Ilashe–Odofin route in Amuwo Odofin. He also revealed that navigation buoys have been installed across major waterways to enhance safer and more efficient movement of ferries and commercial boats.

He further stated that the government has commenced the installation of modern concrete floating pontoons at selected jetties as part of ongoing efforts to modernize water transport infrastructure and improve passenger docking facilities.

According to him, the floating pontoons are designed to adjust to fluctuating water levels, making boarding safer and more convenient compared to conventional wooden jetties. Installation is currently ongoing at Agboyi Ketu, Ijegun Egba, and Bayeku, while additional locations such as Ebute Ero, Ijede, Apa, Mile 2, and Mowo have been scheduled for upgrades.

He added that the initiative will enhance commuter experience, strengthen safety on inland waterways, stimulate economic activities in riverine communities, and further support an integrated transportation system across Lagos State. The government, he reaffirmed, remains committed to unlocking the full economic potential of the state’s waterways through continuous investment in modern infrastructure.
