National Youth Service Corps Celebrates 53rd Anniversary In Katsina

The Katsina State chapter of the National Youth Service Corps has joined other formations across the country to mark the 53rd anniversary of the scheme, celebrating more than five decades of national service, unity, and youth development.

According to Ireporter Online, the commemoration event was formally kicked off at the NYSC camp pavilion by the State Coordinator, Mr Okwor Evans, alongside senior officials of the scheme, followed by a colourful procession into Katsina town as part of activities lined up for the celebration.

Speaking during the event, the State Coordinator described the anniversary as a moment of reflection, appreciation, and renewed commitment, noting that the NYSC has remained one of Nigeria’s most enduring national institutions since its establishment in 1973 under the administration of General Yakubu Gowon. He emphasised that the scheme continues to play a vital role in fostering unity, reconciliation, reconstruction, and national integration.

Corps members were also sensitised on the historical background and core objectives of the scheme, with emphasis on its contributions to nation-building. Key programmes such as the Community Development Service (CDS) and the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) initiative were highlighted as essential tools for empowering young Nigerians and promoting self-reliance.

The Coordinator further stressed the importance of sustaining the ideals of the NYSC, urging corps members and staff to remain committed, disciplined, and dedicated to service. He also commended the Federal Government for its continued support in sustaining the scheme despite prevailing challenges, while encouraging participants to uphold integrity in all their activities.

The celebration climaxed with the cutting of the 53rd anniversary cake, symbolising unity and continuity within the scheme.
