Navy Launches Housing Projects For Junior Ranks

The Nigerian Navy has commissioned new accommodation and recreational facilities in Lagos as part of ongoing efforts to enhance personnel welfare, improve living conditions, and tackle longstanding housing shortages within the Service.

The projects, inaugurated at Navy Town, Ojo, during activities marking the Navy’s 70th anniversary celebration, include a 48-unit one-bedroom accommodation block for junior ratings, a 16-unit two-bedroom apartment complex for senior ratings, and the Dolphin Golf Club House.

According to Ireporter Online, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, said the newly completed infrastructure underscores the Navy’s commitment to improving welfare, modernising its facilities, and strengthening operational efficiency. He noted that the developments reflect the Service’s transformation into a more modern maritime force dedicated to providing a conducive environment for personnel and their families.

Vice Admiral Abbas disclosed that the 48-unit accommodation project for junior ratings had been abandoned for over five years before his administration revived and completed it, stressing that the Navy would continue to prioritise the completion of viable abandoned projects nationwide to ensure effective use of already committed resources.

He further explained that the newly commissioned Dolphin Golf Club House was designed to encourage professional interaction, relaxation, and stronger relationships among serving personnel, veterans, and strategic partners. The Naval Chief also emphasized the importance of proper maintenance of the facilities, urging personnel and managers to ensure efficient use of electricity and proper upkeep of the structures.

Abbas commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support toward the modernization and development of the Nigerian Navy, while also praising contractors, engineers, and project teams for delivering the projects within schedule.

The Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, also lauded the Naval Chief for prioritizing personnel welfare and infrastructural renewal, assuring that the facilities would be properly maintained for sustainable use.

Earlier, Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship WEY, Commodore Mohammed Alhassan, said the projects were conceived to address accommodation challenges faced by personnel in Lagos. He explained that the 48-unit facility was designed to provide safe and comfortable housing for junior ratings to boost morale and operational effectiveness.

He added that the project, initially awarded before the current Naval leadership, was abandoned for about five years until it was revived and completed within eight weeks after documentation processes were finalized. He also noted that the 16-unit senior ratings apartment complex became usable only after critical external works and supporting infrastructure were completed, while advanced engineering solutions were deployed to stabilize the waterlogged site.

Alhassan further disclosed that the Dolphin Golf Club House, a two-storey recreational facility equipped with lounges, offices, a bar, kitchen, changing rooms, and parking space, was completed ahead of schedule.
