Arteta Hails PSG As World’s Best After Arsenal’s Champions League Final Heartbreak
According to IReporter Online, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described Paris Saint-Germain as the best team in the world following the Gunners’ heartbreaking defeat in the UEFA Champions League final held in Budapest.
Arsenal, who entered the final as Premier League champions, fell short of European glory after losing 4–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw after extra time. The result extended the North London club’s long wait for a Champions League title, 20 years after their first final appearance against Barcelona.
Speaking after the match, Arteta admitted that PSG were superior for long periods of the game, particularly in possession, and described his immediate reaction to the loss as one of deep disappointment. He praised PSG head coach Luis Enrique and his squad for their technical quality, ball control, and relentless pressure, which he said forced Arsenal into sustained defensive work.
Arteta stated that PSG’s ability on the ball and their individual brilliance stood out throughout the encounter, adding that he had rarely seen such sustained dominance at that level. He also acknowledged that the French champions dictated the tempo of the game, limiting Arsenal’s attacking opportunities for much of the contest.
Arsenal initially took the lead through Kai Havertz, raising hopes of a historic triumph, but Paris Saint-Germain responded in the second half when Ousmane Dembélé converted from the penalty spot to restore parity. PSG also matched the record for the most goals scored in a single Champions League campaign, highlighting their attacking strength throughout the tournament.
Despite Arsenal’s resilience, PSG continued to dominate possession and eventually secured victory in the penalty shoot-out, sealing back-to-back Champions League titles. Arteta also expressed frustration over a first-half incident involving Noni Madueke, where he believed Arsenal should have been awarded a penalty, though he declined to attribute the defeat solely to officiating decisions.
The Arsenal manager emphasized that while his team has made significant progress domestically under his leadership, the defeat underscored the additional level required to compete with Europe’s elite. He called for reflection and growth, stating that the experience must be used as motivation for future improvement.
Arteta concluded that Arsenal must continue their development trajectory if they are to challenge consistently at the highest level, noting that European success demands an even higher standard amid increasing competition across the continent.
