Police Reveal Cause Of Lagos Market Explosion

Authorities have concluded that Monday’s explosion at the shoe materials market in Mushin, Lagos was not linked to terrorism, sabotage, or the use of an improvised explosive device (IED), following a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

According to official findings made available to journalists, the explosion, which occurred on Monday morning, left one person injured after a vehicle suddenly exploded within the market, initially triggering fears of a possible bomb attack.

The incident prompted an immediate response from the Lagos State Police Command, which deployed operatives of its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to secure the area and commence investigations after early reports suggested that an explosive device may have detonated beneath the vehicle when its engine was started.

The injured occupant was promptly taken to a hospital for medical treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.

However, after a detailed forensic and technical examination, police authorities confirmed that the explosion was not caused by any explosive device or criminal activity.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, the police disclosed that investigators found no evidence of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or any blast patterns typically associated with terrorist attacks or deliberate explosions.

The statement explained that the explosion resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component located outside the vehicle, leading to a sudden release of energy that shattered the front passenger-side glass panels and caused minor injuries to the occupant.

The Lagos State Police Command assured residents that the incident has been professionally classified as a mechanical explosion, effectively ruling out terrorism, sabotage, or any form of criminal use of explosives.
