Saudi Football Chief Resigns After World Cup Exit: “My Apologies To Everyone
According to Ireporter Online, the President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, Yasser Al-Misehal, has resigned from his position following Saudi Arabia’s early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Green Falcons finished bottom of Group H with just two points, failing to record a win in their three group-stage matches. Their campaign included a 1-1 draw against Uruguay, a goalless stalemate with Cape Verde, and a heavy 4-0 defeat to Spain.
In a statement posted on on Sunday night, Al-Misehal admitted that the team’s performance fell short of expectations and took full responsibility for the disappointing outcome. He expressed regret to supporters, noting that the result was not in line with the nation’s ambitions.
He further explained that his decision to step down was motivated by accountability and the need to allow a new direction for Saudi football, adding that he would not continue until the end of his current tenure.
Al-Misehal had served as federation president for seven years and was instrumental in Saudi Arabia’s successful bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, a key milestone in the country’s long-term sports and economic development strategy.
Despite heavy investment in football, including the acquisition of global stars and the rise of the Saudi Pro League as one of the world’s most lucrative competitions, the national team endured a disappointing tournament campaign. Saudi Arabia, appearing in its third consecutive World Cup, exited at the group stage after a series of underwhelming performances, which also followed a turbulent build-up marked by coaching changes, including the departure of Hervé Renard.
