Why Rescued Oyo Pupils Can’t See Their Parents Yet – Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that the pupils and teachers recently rescued from captivity after being abducted in Oriire Local Government Area will remain under medical observation for 48 hours before they are officially transferred to the state government for further care and rehabilitation.

According to Ireporter Online, the governor made the disclosure on Saturday during a visit to the rescued victims at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, where they are currently receiving treatment following their release.

Makinde described the successful rescue as a moment of gratitude and relief for the government, the victims’ families and the people of Oyo State. He expressed appreciation to God for the safe return of the innocent pupils and their teachers after enduring weeks in captivity, noting that their freedom marked the end of a painful chapter for the state.

The governor confirmed that all 39 abducted pupils and five of the seven teachers had been rescued and were now in the custody of security authorities. He commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their courage, professionalism and unwavering commitment throughout the rescue operation, describing the outcome as the result of sustained collaboration among security operatives.

Makinde, however, acknowledged that the operation came at a significant cost, revealing that some security personnel lost their lives while carrying out the mission. He paid tribute to the fallen officers, describing them as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. He also extended condolences to their families and assured them that their bravery and dedication would never be forgotten.

Speaking on the condition of the rescued victims, the governor disclosed that several of the pupils and teachers were physically weak and emotionally affected after their prolonged ordeal. He stressed that beyond regaining their freedom, they would require comprehensive medical attention, psychological counselling and rehabilitation to aid their full recovery.

Makinde explained that military medical experts had advised that the victims remain under close observation for another 48 hours to allow for a thorough evaluation of their physical and mental health before they are formally handed over to the Oyo State Government. He said the administration fully supports the recommendation, emphasizing that the health and well-being of the victims remain its highest priority.

He further revealed that arrangements were being made to allow family members visit the victims at the military medical facility. According to the governor, one of the rescued girls had repeatedly requested to see her mother since regaining her freedom, prompting authorities to facilitate controlled family reunions that would not disrupt the ongoing treatment and recovery process.

Makinde assured parents and relatives that the government would continue providing every necessary support to help the rescued pupils and teachers recover from the trauma they experienced during their captivity.

The governor also called on Nigerians to remain united in tackling insecurity, stressing that addressing the nation’s security challenges requires cooperation among citizens, governments and security agencies. He urged residents to continue providing credible intelligence that would assist security agencies in preventing future attacks and bringing criminal elements to justice.

He added that the Oyo State Government would, in the coming days, provide a detailed briefing on the circumstances surrounding the abduction and the coordinated security operation that led to the successful rescue of the victims. Makinde reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with security agencies to strengthen the protection of schools, communities and other vulnerable locations across the state.
