SILEC-SIM: A Lone Voice Speaking Against The Tide

SILEC International Magazine has been officially unveiled as a new global media platform aimed at raising awareness, empowering young people and addressing critical social challenges, particularly drug abuse and youth vulnerability.

According to Ireporter Online, the initiative was launched by Sunny Irakpo, who described SILEC as more than a publication, but a solution-driven platform designed to reshape conversations, create opportunities and provide support for disadvantaged communities.

Speaking at the launch event, Irakpo compared the importance of the initiative to a SIM card in a mobile phone, explaining that just as a phone without a SIM cannot fulfil its purpose, society requires platforms that connect people, provide solutions and create meaningful impact.

He stated that SILEC International Magazine would focus on awareness creation, youth empowerment, employment opportunities and support for underprivileged students, especially in Nigeria where millions of children face barriers to education.

The event was opened with a prayer by Venerable Shola Ogbedebi, who praised Irakpo’s commitment to fighting drug abuse and described him as a passionate advocate whose work has contributed to shaping discussions around youth development and social issues.

Ogbedebi highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in raising children in a society facing increasing challenges, particularly the dangers of substance abuse.

During his address, Irakpo referenced global statistics on drug abuse, noting the growing impact of substance-related challenges worldwide and the urgent need for stronger advocacy, education and intervention programmes.

He emphasized that young people remain among the most affected groups and called for increased collaboration among communities, governments and organisations to tackle the crisis.

The Chairman of the occasion, Rt. Revd. Dr. Augustine Unuigbe, Coordinating Bishop of the Church of Nigeria North America Mission and Managing Director of Rapha Medical Group, commended the initiative and shared his experience witnessing the effects of drug abuse through his medical career.

Unuigbe praised Irakpo’s long-standing advocacy efforts, recalling his previous presentation on drug addiction and its impact on society. He described SILEC Initiatives as a credible platform and encouraged individuals and organisations to support its mission.

The bishop officially unveiled SILEC International Magazine electronically, highlighting the use of modern technology and artificial intelligence tools to expand the reach of the campaign.

The launch featured presentations, videos and stories focusing on addiction recovery, entrepreneurship and social challenges affecting communities. The event attracted support from community leaders, including Dr. Inua Momodu, President of the Nigerian Community in Atlantic County, New Jersey, who pledged continued collaboration in the fight against drug abuse.

Also present was Mrs. Queen Akpotu, President General of the Isoko Association North America, alongside other stakeholders who expressed willingness to partner with the initiative.

Addressing mothers and families, Irakpo stressed the important role of parents in shaping society and preventing young people from falling into destructive behaviours. He urged families to strengthen moral guidance and remain actively involved in the upbringing of children.

He also paid tribute to his late parents, Pa Christopher Ewomarevia and Mrs. Victoria Adiheji Irakpo, crediting them for instilling the values of education and responsible parenting that inspired the SILEC vision.

The ceremony concluded with closing remarks and prayers as attendees expressed support for the initiative. The event also reached a wider audience through a livestream that attracted viewers across different continents.
