Akoko-Edo Needs More Than Palliative Roads, Bishop Tells Okpebholo

The Bishop of Akoko-Edo Diocese of the Church of Nigeria, Global Anglican Communion, Revd. Ebenezer Saiki, has called on Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to prioritise major developmental projects in Akoko-Edo, stressing that residents deserve more than temporary solutions.

According to Ireporter Online, the cleric made the call during the second session of the sixth Synod of the diocese held at St Peter’s Church, Ikakumo, where he acknowledged the governor’s ongoing palliative intervention on the Auchi-Igarra-Ibillo Road.

While commending the effort, Saiki urged the state government to move beyond temporary repairs and focus on sustainable infrastructure projects that would provide long-term benefits for the people of Akoko-Edo.

The bishop noted that while other parts of the state were witnessing major road projects, Akoko-Edo residents were mainly receiving palliative measures, adding that the area deserved equal attention in the distribution of development projects.

He said the ongoing road intervention had brought noticeable improvements but appealed to the government to pursue permanent solutions that would stand the test of time.

Speaking on the 2027 general elections, Saiki urged politicians, political parties and candidates to respect democratic principles by allowing Nigerians to make electoral choices based on their convictions rather than financial inducements.

The cleric called for fairness, decency and respect for democratic values, warning that elections should not become opportunities for undermining the principles of good governance.

He emphasized that Nigeria would achieve greater progress when citizens are allowed to vote freely based on their beliefs and expectations.

On security challenges, the bishop urged residents of Akoko-Edo not to give in to fear, stressing that communities must work together with security agencies to protect lives and property.

Saiki encouraged residents to remain vigilant, united and committed to lawful cooperation with authorities, noting that collective efforts were necessary to resist threats posed by criminal elements.
