World Cup: Qatar Creates New Record After Losing Opener To Ecuador
Enner Valencia scored twice as Ecuador defeated Qatar 2-0 in the tournament opener on Sunday, making Qatar the first home team to lose their opening World Cup game.
Asian champions Qatar had the support of a 67,000-strong crowd at Al Bayt Stadium, but they were unable to follow up a glitzy opening ceremony with a statement performance.
Ecuador thought they had gotten off to a great start when Valencia headed in the third minute, only to have the goal ruled out by VAR for offside in the build-up.

Qatar’s reprieve was only temporary, as Valencia put the South American side ahead from the penalty spot in the 16th minute before doubling his tally just after the half-hour mark.
Qatar improved in the second period, but by the end of the 90 minutes, the excitement of the opening ceremony had faded.
“Our nerves let us down, and we got off to a bad start,” Qatar coach Felix Sanchez said. “We were unable to make four consecutive passes.”

Qatar will almost certainly need to avoid defeat in their second Group A match against Senegal on Friday in order to avoid becoming only the second host, after South Africa in 2010, to be eliminated in the first round.
The crowd was hoping that Qatar would make a winning start, but Ecuador ruthlessly exposed the shortcomings of the World Cup debutants.
“It was a day we all dreamed of,” said Ecuador left-back Pervis Estupinan. “We are all very proud. We all know what an incredible captain we have with Enner Valencia.”
Qatar failed to register a single shot on target during the game, and fans filed out long before the final whistle.
