During the destruction of falsified, expired, and substandard products valued at ₦1.367 billion on Thursday in Abuja, NAFDAC Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye emphasized the agency’s zero tolerance for harmful goods in Nigeria’s supply chain. The products, seized from non-compliant manufacturers, suppliers, and sellers, included counterfeit drugs, food items, cosmetics, and chemicals.

The DG, represented by Festus Ukadike, revealed that in 2024 alone, NAFDAC destroyed counterfeit goods worth over ₦120 billion, including 6,000 bags of re-bagged rice seized from criminal networks. The ongoing crackdown aims to eliminate harmful products from the market and ensure consumer safety.

Products destroyed included psychoactive drugs, antibiotics, herbal remedies, improperly labeled food items, and counterfeit cosmetics such as skin-lightening creams. Expired goods voluntarily surrendered by NGOs and other stakeholders were also destroyed.

Prof. Adeyeye highlighted NAFDAC’s strengthened post-marketing surveillance, enforcement activities, and collaboration with security agencies, traditional leaders, and the public to combat the menace of counterfeit products. She urged consumers to report suspicious goods and reiterated the agency’s dedication to ensuring that only safe and high-quality products reach Nigerian markets.

The event also saw support from the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). Both organizations commended NAFDAC’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to quality standards to safeguard public health and national security.
