$12 Million In 10 Days? SunTrust MD Buba Under Fire Over Staggering Forex Swap Allegations!
The high-profile trial of Halima Buba, Managing Director of SunTrust Bank, and the bank’s Executive Director, Innocent Mbagwu, who stand accused of laundering a staggering $12 million, commenced on Thursday before Justice Emeka Nwite at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Operating under the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, the MCO is entrusted with regulating mining licenses, a role that is central to the country’s economic stability and security. Yet, according to iReporter Online, what should be a beacon of regulatory excellence has deteriorated into a hotbed of corruption and institutional failure.
On June 19, 2025, a virtual stakeholder session organized by the Ministry intended to restore investor confidence collapsed into chaos. Stakeholders, frustrated by years of unresolved grievances, lambasted the MCO for imposing arbitrary fees, delaying applications, and granting overlapping licenses that have paralyzed Nigeria’s mining industry.
According to iReporter Online, the most egregious issue stems from the widespread issuance of licenses over valid titles, a malpractice that has resulted in conflicting claims, legal uncertainty, and disillusionment across the sector.
At the heart of this dysfunction lies a culture of bribery and fraudulent documentation. Investigations reveal that community consent letters—required by law to grant mining titles—can be easily forged for a fee. Industry insiders disclosed that at least one MCO official facilitated over 50 such fake documents, allowing applicants to bypass legal procedures in exchange for bribes. This corruption has turned MCO into a cash cow that thrives on systemic disorder rather than regulatory discipline.
Meanwhile, MCO’s much-touted digital reform, the EMC+ system funded by the World Bank through the MINDIVER Project, has failed to deliver. Applicants report receiving titles that are later overridden by new ones, often depending on how much “facilitation” money is paid. Ironically, the Director General, Simon Obadiah Nkom, received international accolades for leading this initiative—recognition that many stakeholders now see as undeserved.
According to iReporter Online, users have described the automated platform as “an absolute mess,” undermining the very principles of transparency and efficiency it was meant to uphold.
Perhaps the most glaring embarrassment is Nigeria’s repeated failure to showcase viable mining projects at international conventions. Despite large government delegations attending events like PDAC in Canada, Mining Indaba in South Africa, and Mines and Money in the UK, the country consistently arrives empty-handed. While peer nations present real achievements to attract global investors, Nigeria’s officials reportedly hand out brochures with no substantial backing—further tarnishing the country’s reputation on the world stage.
Ultimately, the MCO’s steady decline from a regulatory engine to a national liability poses a direct threat to economic diversification. A sector once driven by order, manual precision, and legal clarity is now suffocating under a regime of chaos, inflated fees, and compromised leadership. According to iReporter Online, the time has come for urgent reform—reforms that must prioritize accountability, transparency, and a total overhaul of the systems and people that have failed the sector.
The question remains: will Nigeria finally muster the political courage to reclaim the integrity of House 37, Lobito Crescent, or will it continue down a path of lost opportunities and squandered resources?
