2027 Election Will Be Nigerians vs APC, Not PDP Vs APC – Governor Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has stated that the 2027 presidential election will not be a traditional contest between the two dominant parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Makinde expressed confidence in the PDP’s position as the party that represents the interests of the average Nigerian. He also emphasized that the party had learned from its mistakes in the 2023 elections and was committed to avoiding a repeat.

He remarked, “The 2027 election won’t be PDP versus APC; it will be Nigerians versus APC. You can quote me on that.”

Reflecting on the previous election cycle, Makinde acknowledged a critical misstep by the PDP: allocating all three major campaign leadership positions to individuals from the northern region. He pointed out that this lack of regional balance significantly undermined the party’s electoral prospects.

He explained, “How do you sell a presidential campaign to a diverse nation when the three most influential roles were held by people from the North East, North Central, and North West?”

To recap, during the 2023 election period, the PDP’s leadership structure included Iyorchia Ayu (North Central) as the National Chairman, Atiku Abubakar (North East) as the presidential candidate, and Aminu Tambuwal (North West) as the Director-General of the campaign. Governor Makinde believes this regional imbalance contributed heavily to the PDP’s defeat at the polls.
