2027 Presidency: Peter Obi Won’t Betray Single-Term Deal — Tanko

The Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has assured Nigerians that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would honour any agreement requiring him to serve a single term if elected president in 2027.

Speaking on Arise Television, Tanko stressed that Obi is a man of integrity who would never renege on a pact made in good faith.

“If we agree that it will be a one-term presidency, he will abide by it. Obi is someone who stands by his word,” Tanko said.

Defends Obi’s Two-Year Stability Promise

Tanko also defended Obi’s recent declaration that he could stabilise Nigeria within two years if elected. He pointed to Obi’s proactive efforts, such as his visit to Egypt to study its power sector, as proof of his commitment to tangible solutions.

“It’s not an exaggeration. During his first term in Anambra, he united the people and cleared governance backlogs. Solving electricity alone will radically transform Nigeria by empowering countless small businesses,” he said.

Gaining Wider Acceptance Beyond Region, Religion

Tanko noted that Obi’s appeal continues to grow across the country, citing recent recognition by members of an Emirate Council who presented him an award as evidence of his national acceptance.

“Today, even some traditional leaders from the North came to honour him. Many of us — Hausa, Fulani, Muslims, Christians — have embraced him because we see a unifier,” Tanko added.

No Talks Yet With Atiku Over Joint Ticket

He dismissed widespread rumours of ongoing talks between Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar about a possible joint presidential ticket for 2027.

“There’s no such discussion. People are speculating. That topic hasn’t come up,” Tanko clarified.

Focus On Broad, People-Centred Coalition

Tanko said the Obidient Movement remains committed to building a coalition founded on integrity, inclusiveness and service to the people. While consultations are underway with like-minded political parties and stakeholders, he insisted that any alliance must be about rescuing Nigeria — not advancing ethnic or religious interests.

“Peter Obi wants a coalition driven by competence and capacity, not tribal or religious sentiments. It’s about Nigeria, not just the Labour Party,” he said.

Tanko concluded by emphasising that ongoing conversations are aimed at merging forces across the country to create a genuine alternative that puts Nigerians first.
