APC: Orji Kalu Reveals Why Ganduje Stepped Down As Party Chairman

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) and former Governor of Abia State, has explained why Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje resigned as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The sudden resignation of Ganduje, a former two-term governor of Kano State, last week sparked widespread speculation. While the APC maintained that it was a personal decision made in good faith, many Nigerians questioned the real motive behind it.

The ruling party has since accepted Ganduje’s resignation and commenced the process to appoint a new chairman.

Resignation Due To Health Concerns — Kalu

Speaking on Channels Television, Kalu disclosed that Ganduje stepped down primarily for health reasons.

“I was with the national chairman just two weeks ago at his residence. We discussed health, the party, and many other things. Health issues are something beyond anyone’s control,” Kalu said.

He emphasized that Ganduje made the decision to prioritize his well-being over the rigours of political life.

“Can he realistically continue moving from Sokoto to Rivers, Kebbi to Calabar, Yobe to Abia and Lagos? It’s a tough job. Health is wealth, and he needs to look after himself,” he added.

Dismisses Political Intrigues

Amid claims that Ganduje’s resignation was linked to political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections — including alleged moves to accommodate New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader Rabiu Kwankwaso in the APC — Kalu insisted there was no hidden agenda.

“He’s very close to President Tinubu. If it wasn’t about health, he wouldn’t have said so. Nigerians should believe him. Even if Kwankwaso were to join the party, it wouldn’t affect Ganduje’s decision,” he said.

Kalu pointed out that Ganduje was among the first governors to openly back Tinubu’s presidential ambition.

“The President is bold enough to tell anyone to step down if necessary, but that’s not the case here. It was Ganduje’s own decision.”

The former governor urged Nigerians to trust the words of their leaders and avoid reading political motives into every development.

“We should learn to believe our leaders when they speak. Ganduje made his choice, and it was the right one for his health,” Kalu concluded.
