with at least 68 fatalities occurring in 2024 while on duty. More than 60% of these deaths took place in countries embroiled in conflict, marking the highest rate of journalist killings in over a decade, according to new data released by UNESCO.

“Reliable information is crucial in times of conflict to assist affected communities and to inform the global audience,” stated UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay on Thursday. “It is unacceptable for journalists to lose their lives while carrying out this essential work.”

The report indicates that this year, 42 journalists lost their lives in conflict zones, with Palestine experiencing the highest toll of 18 deaths. Other nations, including Ukraine, Colombia, Iraq, Lebanon, Myanmar, and Sudan, also reported multiple journalist fatalities, highlighting the increased dangers faced in areas affected by violence and unrest.

This trend is concerning, as the past two years have seen more journalists killed in conflict than in any similar timeframe since 2016-2017. However, the overall number of journalist fatalities has slightly decreased this year. Notably, non-conflict zones accounted for 26 journalist deaths, the lowest figure recorded in 16 years.

This decline was especially significant in Latin America and the Caribbean, where journalist killings dropped from 43 in 2022 to 12 in 2024, indicating some progress in addressing threats against journalists in regions previously plagued by violence.

UNESCO’s data is meticulously verified and sourced from prominent international press freedom organizations. Deaths are excluded if they are determined to be unrelated to journalistic activities, although many cases remain under review, and UNESCO continues to monitor developments closely.

Beyond documenting fatalities, UNESCO is committed to protecting journalists through initiatives such as the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity. Additionally, journalists are encountering new obstacles, including financial and legal challenges. UNESCO has noted a 42% rise in attacks against journalists covering environmental issues between 2019 and 2024, emphasizing the evolving threats faced by the media.

As UNESCO works to promote press freedom and protect journalists, the agency calls on the international community to enhance safeguards for media professionals, ensuring that the pursuit of truth does not come at the cost of their lives.
