Adamawa Stands Still as Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa Is Turbaned Jakadiyan Garkida(Photos)

The serene Garkida district in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State transformed into a hub of excitement and celebration yesterday as Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa (Rtd) Mni OFR, the first woman to attain the rank of Rear Admiral in Northern Nigeria, was turbaned as the Jakadiyan Garkida.

This historic occasion drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, reflecting the esteem in which Admiral Malafa is held. Among those present were General Paul Tarfa, Chairman of the North East Development Commission; Kefas Tagwi, Accountant General of Adamawa State; and Hajiya Jamila Nasiru Ahmed, wife of the senior brother of First Lady Aisha Buhari.

Admiral Malafa’s journey is one of exceptional achievements and relentless dedication. A retired Rear Admiral of the Nigerian Navy, she served as Director of Legal Services at Naval Headquarters and Head of Legal for the multinational Joint Taskforce comprising Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Benin, and Nigeria. An alumna of the prestigious National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), she was also conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) honor by former President Muhammadu Buhari, in recognition of her contributions to the nation.

The colorful turbaning ceremony was graced by other notable personalities, including Mr. Yakubu Tsala, former Secretary of the Sugar Development Commission; Dr. Mary Paninnga, Chairman of the Adamawa State Planning Commission; and the District Head of Ngawba. Representing Prof. Jibril Aminu, the former Minister of Petroleum and Education, was Alhaji Ahmadu Sa’idu, the District Head of Song Local Government. Prof. JD Amin, Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, was also in attendance, along with an impressive array of admirals, generals, captains of industry, family, and friends.

Admiral Malafa’s daughters, Sakeena and Samira, joined their mother to celebrate this momentous occasion, which symbolized not only personal triumph but also a broader celebration of women’s empowerment in the region.

The event underscored Admiral Malafa’s role as a trailblazer and role model. Her leadership, discipline, and unwavering commitment to excellence have left an indelible mark on history, particularly in a region where her achievements resonate deeply as a source of inspiration.

As festivities filled the air in Garkida, the turbaning of Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Malafa as Jakadiyan Garkida was celebrated as a monumental moment, cementing her legacy as a symbol of progress, resilience, and exemplary service.
