Advocating For Change: FG Highlights The Plight Of People With Disabilities

Adiekweh highlighted that the event was organized to shed light on the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and to advocate for the protection of their rights. “Persons with disabilities have rights, and those rights must be defended,” she stressed, underscoring the importance of raising public awareness and ensuring that the voices of the disabled are heard.

The roadshow, led by the Ministry’s Department of Social Security and Cooperative Development, is part of a global observance established by the United Nations. The event encourages society to recognize the needs of disabled individuals and work towards making necessary changes to improve their quality of life.

Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwa, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, expressed his satisfaction that the Ministry of Labour and Employment was joining in the global recognition of this important day. He described it as a time for reflection on the progress made in improving the lives of people with disabilities while acknowledging that more needs to be done.

“We are making progress, but there is still a long road ahead,” Gufwa remarked. He called on other government ministries, departments, and agencies to step up in raising awareness and ensuring that public institutions are inclusive and accessible to all, especially those living with disabilities.

Noting the staggering 35 million Nigerians living with disabilities, Gufwa emphasized the need for the country to become more adaptable and inclusive. “This is a number greater than that of many nations, and it’s increasing due to accidents, aging, and health conditions,” he explained.

The 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which carries the theme “Amplifying Leadership of Persons With Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” aims to empower individuals with disabilities and promote their rights and well-being across the globe.
