Akume Leads Tributes as Nigeria Mourns Passing of Statesman Audu Ogbeh

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has described the death of former Agriculture Minister Audu Ogbeh as a “monumental loss to the nation.” The prominent Benue statesman passed away on Friday at age 78, sparking nationwide tributes.

During a condolence visit to Ogbeh’s Abuja residence on Saturday, Akume praised his kinsman as “a distinguished leader and consummate public servant” who dedicated his life to national service. In an official statement, the SGF highlighted Ogbeh’s remarkable political career spanning multiple administrations.

“Chief Ogbeh was a voice of reason who served with integrity,” Akume noted, referencing the deceased’s tenure as PDP National Chairman (2001-2005) and ministerial roles in Communications and Agriculture. The SGF particularly commended Ogbeh’s agricultural reforms that boosted Nigeria’s food security.

Political leaders across party lines have joined the mourning, remembering Ogbeh as a bridge-builder and intellectual who championed peace and equity. Akume emphasized that Nigeria would miss the elder statesman’s “wealth of experience and international reach,” while praying for divine comfort for the bereaved family.
