Akwa Ibom Women Throw Weight Behind Tinubu, Akpabio, And Eno For 2027

Thousands of women in Akwa Ibom State have publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 general elections. The endorsement took place on Saturday during the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration in Uyo, the state capital, which drew over 5,000 women and was attended by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

At the event, participants also voiced support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno for another term in their respective offices. According to Ireporter Online, the endorsement was formally declared by the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, alongside other prominent female leaders.

In her address, the First Lady highlighted the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls,” describing it as a call for collective efforts to enhance opportunities and welfare for women. She stressed that ensuring women’s access to education, economic empowerment, healthcare, social protection, and equity is critical for national development.

“This year’s theme is a call to action. Protecting the rights of women and girls through education, economic empowerment, health, social protection, and equity is an investment in our collective future,” Mrs Tinubu said. She urged women to serve as positive agents of change within their families, communities, and workplaces, adding that women who lead with purpose create a meaningful impact on the nation.

The First Lady also highlighted ongoing reforms by the current administration, emphasizing their aim to establish a strong foundation for sustainable development. “The reforms already initiated are designed to create a lasting legacy of transformation and prosperity for all Nigerians. A house is not built in a day, but when the foundation is solid, the structure stands the test of time,” she said, calling for unity in safeguarding the progress made.

Speaking at the event, Senate President Akpabio praised women for their vital role in stabilizing families and society, while Governor Eno acknowledged their resilience and contributions, noting that the success of any society depends largely on women.

Earlier in the day, the First Lady commissioned an ultra-modern Senior Citizens Centre in Uyo, named in her honour. She emphasised the importance of caring for the elderly and encouraged families and communities to complement government initiatives with social support and compassion. The centre, originally conceptualized by the late wife of the governor, Pastor Patience Eno, aims to provide seniors with healthcare, recreation, and social services in a safe and dignified environment.
