Another PDP Senator Defects From Party
According to reports, Senator Ibrahim Khalid Mustapha, representing Kaduna North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing unresolved internal conflicts within the party. His resignation, communicated in a letter dated March 27, 2026, was addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Soba Ward in Soba Local Government Area.
Mustapha explained that persistent leadership disputes, ongoing court cases, and divisions at various levels have made active participation in the party increasingly untenable. “The internal crisis, unending court cases, and resulting leadership disagreements have made it difficult for me to continue my membership, active participation, and commitment as a member,” he stated.
He noted that the recurring conflicts had eroded the unity and clear direction that once defined the party, making it challenging to align with its current operations. According to the senator, the party’s present state no longer reflects the ideals that initially motivated his membership.
Despite his resignation, Mustapha expressed gratitude to party members and supporters who have supported him throughout his political career. “I sincerely thank all the party faithful for their support and belief in me over the years. You have been a strong pillar, and I remain deeply appreciative of the trust and encouragement I have received,” he added.
The letter serves as his formal notice of resignation. While reports suggest that Mustapha may be considering joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), no official confirmation has yet been made.
This development follows a wave of recent defections from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Senators Ikra Bilbis of Zamfara Central, Aminu Iya Abbas of Adamawa Central, and Amos Yohanna of Adamawa North. Their departures, announced during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, were also attributed to internal crises and leadership challenges within the PDP.
