APC Opts For Direct Primary Elections In Benue
According to Ireporter Online, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North-Central zone has confirmed that it will adopt the direct primary method for selecting its candidates in Benue State ahead of upcoming elections.
The clarification was given by the party’s North-Central National Vice Chairman, Mu’azu Rijau, during a reconciliation meeting held in Makurdi on Sunday. His position was later contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Benue State APC Chairman, Benjamin Omale, and made available to journalists in Makurdi.
Rijau addressed growing concerns within the party over alleged plans to issue automatic tickets to certain aspirants, stressing that such arrangements would not stand. He explained that the APC remains guided by internal directives and the provisions of the Electoral Act in determining its mode of primaries.
He reaffirmed that the party in Benue State remains united and committed to the agreed process.
“Right from 2022 and 2023 when we took over power, we have been one family, and today we are all back to the fold as one united family,” Rijau stated. “Based on party directives and the provisions of the Electoral Act, the mode of primaries should be consensus or direct. Initially, we decided to adopt direct primaries in Benue State, and that remains the decision.”
The clarification is expected to calm tensions among aspirants and stakeholders who had expressed concern over the possibility of automatic tickets ahead of the primaries.
Commending President Bola Tinubu for facilitating the reconciliation meeting, Benjamin Omale described the intervention as a major step toward restoring unity and strengthening the APC in Benue State. He said the President’s involvement reflects his commitment to peace, party cohesion, and development in the state.
“I thank President Bola Tinubu for initiating the reconciliation meeting. This singular act shows how Mr President values and loves Benue State and its people,” Omale said, adding that the meeting had helped resolve internal disagreements and foster unity ahead of the primaries.
Omale further reaffirmed the loyalty of the Benue APC to the President, pledging continued support for his administration.
“We assure the President of our total commitment and loyalty always. Benue is all for you,” he stated, noting that the party will continue to align with the President’s vision and development agenda for the state and the nation.
He also praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for his efforts in promoting unity and stability within the party, describing his leadership as instrumental to the APC’s growing strength in Benue State. According to him, the governor’s role has created a conducive atmosphere for reconciliation and party cohesion.
Party leaders and stakeholders were urged to remain united as preparations intensify for the forthcoming primaries and general elections in the state.
