Cooking Gas Price Crashes As Imports Surge, Nigerians Get Relief

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, has recorded a significant decline in Abuja and surrounding areas, offering some relief to households and businesses following weeks of rising costs.

According to Ireporter Online findings, some cooking gas outlets in the Federal Capital Territory are now selling LPG for as low as ₦1,300 per kilogramme, marking a reduction from previous prices that ranged between ₦1,450 and ₦1,500 per kilogramme.

Checks across major gas stations revealed that outlets including Ranoil, Shafa and AP Ardova have adjusted their prices, with LPG now selling at ₦1,350, ₦1,300 and ₦1,400 per kilogramme respectively.

The downward trend has also affected depot prices, as suppliers are now selling cooking gas between ₦997 and ₦1,030 per kilogramme, compared with previous rates that reached about ₦1,100 per kilogramme.

Retailers across parts of Abuja, including Dawaki, Kubwa, Gwarimpa and Lugbe, have equally reduced their prices, with many outlets selling at around ₦1,500 per kilogramme compared with the earlier rate of ₦1,700.

Industry analysts attributed the price reduction to a sharp rise in LPG supply, particularly increased imports into the country.

Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) showed that LPG imports witnessed a major increase in June 2026, rising by about 1,400 per cent to 1.5 kilotonnes daily.

The increase in supply has helped ease pressure on the market and contributed to the recent fall in cooking gas prices across several locations.

Consumers are expected to continue benefiting from the improved availability of LPG if the increased supply trend is sustained in the coming weeks.
