Former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Victor Attah, has accused ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo of derailing his administration’s initiative to provide electricity directly to the residents of Akwa Ibom. with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Attah revealed that between 1999 and 2007, his government constructed a 191-megawatt power station aimed at resolving the state’s electricity issues. However, Obasanjo reportedly insisted that all generated electricity be transferred to the national grid, preventing Akwa Ibom from independently managing its power supply.

“I built a power station with Akwa Ibom’s money, intending to provide the state with 24-hour electricity. But the president intervened and mandated that all power must go to the national grid, which is unreliable. This setback was deeply frustrating,” Attah said.

The former governor criticized Nigeria’s current federal system, describing it as flawed and incapable of promoting sustainable development. He advocated for constitutional restructuring to grant states more autonomy in managing critical sectors like energy.

Attah applauded the recent amendment of the Electricity Act of 2023, which now allows states to generate, distribute, and regulate electricity independently. “Our governor, Umo Eno, is working hard to establish an Akwa Ibom power company to ensure residents finally benefit from the power we generate,” he added.

He emphasized that his clash with Obasanjo was not politically motivated but stemmed from the country’s centralized and inefficient
