As Chief Ayiri Emami approaches his 50th birthday on April 26, 2025, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on his significant influence in Niger Delta politics, particularly his role as a kingmaker within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his strategic alliances that have shaped the region’s political landscape.​

Political Alliances and Influence

Chief Ayiri Emami, a prominent figure in Delta State, transitioned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in April 2015, marking a pivotal shift in his political trajectory. This move aligned him with key political figures and positioned him as a central player in the party’s activities within the Niger Delta region.​

His relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been particularly noteworthy. Emami has been a vocal supporter of Tinubu, advocating for his leadership and rallying support within the Niger Delta. In February 2025, during a gathering with Ilaje communities, Emami emphasized the importance of Tinubu completing two terms in office, stating, “Tinubu must complete his eight years. We say no to gang up.”

Silent Influence in Oil Politics

Beyond party politics, Emami’s involvement in the oil and gas sector has amplified his influence. As an investor and businessman, he has consistently advocated for the provision of basic amenities in oil-producing communities as a strategy to combat oil theft and pipeline vandalism. In a meeting with President Tinubu in January 2024, Emami stressed that addressing infrastructural deficits in the Niger Delta would significantly reduce illegal activities related to oil.

Role in Traditional Institutions

Emami’s influence is also deeply rooted in traditional institutions. He was conferred with the title of Ologbotsere (Prime Minister) of Warri Kingdom by the late Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli. Although his position has seen contention in recent times, his role underscored his commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Itsekiri people.​

Advocacy for Itsekiri Representation

Emami has been a staunch advocate for the political representation of the Itsekiri people. In November 2024, he raised concerns about the marginalization of the Itsekiri in President Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing the need for their inclusion given their contributions to the nation’s oil and gas sector. He stated, “We expect that we need patronage to be part of the government. Our people need to be part of the government.” ​

As Chief Ayiri Emami celebrates his golden jubilee, his multifaceted role as a political strategist, businessman, and traditional leader remains evident. His alliances within the APC, influence in oil politics, and dedication to traditional institutions have solidified his position as a kingmaker in the Niger Delta.
