Azerbaijan Airlines Tragedy: 30 Lives Lost In Aktau Crash

Kazakhstan’s emergency ministry has confirmed that while more than 30 people are feared dead, at least 32 survivors have been accounted for.

At the time this report was compiled, emergency services had retrieved four bodies from the crash site. The incident involved an Embraer 190 aircraft that made an emergency landing around 3 kilometers from Aktau, a significant oil and gas hub on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea.

Witness footage captured the plane’s steep descent before it struck the ground, resulting in a large fireball. Additional images showed parts of the fuselage separated from the wings, with wreckage overturned in a grassy area.

Emergency responders quickly extinguished the flames and transported survivors, including three children, to a nearby hospital for care. Among the passengers were 37 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russians, six Kazakhs, and three Kyrgyzstani individuals.

Russian news outlets reported that the flight had been diverted due to poor visibility in Grozny. Investigations are currently underway, with initial findings suggesting a possible technical problem. Russia’s aviation authority stated that early reports indicated the pilot made an emergency landing after a bird strike.

In response to the incident, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev returned from Russia, where he was set to participate in a summit, and received condolences from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov also expressed his sympathies, stating that those hospitalized are in critical condition and wishing for their recovery.

To further probe into the crash, Azerbaijan’s state news agency Azertac reported that several officials, including the emergencies minister and representatives from Azerbaijan Airlines, have traveled to Aktau to carry out an on-site investigation.
