Bashir Ahmad Slams Peter Obi Over Rumoured NDC Defection Move
According to Ireporter Online, former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has criticised former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, over alleged plans to defect from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), following growing speculation triggered by the recent Supreme Court judgment on the ADC leadership dispute.
Although neither Obi nor his political associates has confirmed the reported move, political commentators have continued to link him with a possible shift to the NDC in the aftermath of the ruling.
Reacting via his official handle on Saturday, Ahmad suggested that the alleged move, if true, could be interpreted as an attempt to avoid internal party competition. He argued that political ambition should be tested within party structures, insisting that primaries remain a key pillar of democratic practice.
He further questioned whether avoiding intra-party contests reflects the kind of experience needed to build national consensus in a diverse country like Nigeria, adding that leaders must be willing to compete fairly within their political platforms.
Ahmad also maintained that internal party elections are essential in assessing leadership capacity, noting that politicians who struggle within party structures may face greater challenges in uniting a broader national electorate.
Meanwhile, the alleged defection remains unverified, as Obi has not issued any official statement regarding a move to the NDC.
